Vasai Fort

Vasai, also called Bassein, lies about 45 kms of Palghar City. it is located in Vasai taluka. The fort in the old city was headquarter of the Portuguese in the north, next in importance to Goa. The coastal land-fort of Vasai was surrounded by sea on three sides and to the landslide it had a moat which was filled by sea-water. its 4.5 kms long strong stone wall had 11 bastions. The fort had two gates- the westward land-gate. There was also a small citadel in the fort well-equipped with water-tanks, store-houses, armory, etc., the fort also had fields for growing grains and vegetables. All the old structures inside the wall are now in ruins.

Vasai was the main naval base and sort of ship-building centre of the Portuguese. it was here in 1802 AD, the Peshwa Bajirav signed the infamous ‘Treaty of Bassein’ which virtually dissolved the Maratha Confederacy. Finally, the fort and the city of Vasai were ceded to the British in 1817 AD.

The nearest railway station is at Vasai, anyone can reach the fort by taking a train up to Virar Railway Station from Churchgate. From here, hire auto-rickshaw or taxi to reach the fort.

By Road

By Bus

Take a right turn at Mastan Naka and head south 1 km to reach “Ten Naka”. Take a left turn and follow the route described above. There is a state run public transport bus at 7:30 AM from Palghar station, that drops you directly to Govardhan Ecovillage. The destination bus stop is called “Galtare.”

Govinda’s Cafe: The vegetarian restaurant operates from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Snacks like tea and cookies are available throughout the day.

Kelva Beach

Kelva beach-sometimes also known as Kelva or Kelva beach is a pristine strech of sea shore and a popular weekend gateway for tourists from Mumbai. The beach is about 8 kilometers long. A very famous tourist attraction, the beach is overcrowded with local tourists during weekends which indicate its growing popularity.

The nearest railway station is KELVE ROAD. Kelve Road is a railway station on the Western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. Kelve Road is located in Palghar district of Maharashtra state in Konkan division. Kelve Road Railway Station is between the Virar-Dahanu local train service.

By Road

From the Mumbai-Ahemedabad Highway NH8 take the turn for Vasai-Safala road or Manor, Palghar Road. Bypass Palghar Road and head directly to Kelva. Beach entrace is nearby Shitaladevi Temple.

Tungareshwar Wild life sanctuary

Tungareshwar wildlife sanctuary also known as Tungareshwar National Park is located on a plateau east of Vasai and Virar in Palghar district, north of Mumbai in the Indian state Maharashtra.

The sanctuary is over 85 km2 and forms a corridor between Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary. It has an altitude of about 2177 feet from the base.

Tungareshwar was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2003. It rises to about 665 meters above sea level, making it a very popular destination for trekkers. In 2003 it was brought under the administrative control of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park Division, Borivali, Mumbai. Many bird walks, nature trails by wildlife professionals from around Mumbai and Vasai Taluka are conducted here. Biodiversity is rich here, about 600 species of plants, over 250 species of birds, 150 species of butterflies and 36 species of herpetofauna have been recorded.

How to Reach:

From Mumbai, Tungareshwar WLS can be reached by road or railways. It is en route the NH 48 towards Gujarat. Via train, one can board the Western line (Mumbai Suburban Railway) and alight at Vasai Road Railway Station which is towards the North of Mumbai suburbs.

Dahanu Bordi Beach

Dahanu Bordi Beach is located in Dahanu taluka of Palghar district. It is spread over a distance of 17 km. Not only for its extensive and tidy beach, Dahanu is also known for its vast chikoo fruit orchids.Although, it is quite warm during summer, the gentle breeze cools down the entire beach. Mecca of the Zoroastrians is a place, which is very popular amongst tourists as there is a magnificient temple, which houses the sacred fire of the Zoroastrians.It is belived that this fire has been kept alive for almost a thousand years. The existence of Iranian and Persian culture further makes this place more exotic.

Dahanu beach is at 3.8 Km distance from the nearest Dahanu road railway station. It takes about 10 Minutes to reach. Similarly Bordi beach is at 2.8 Km from nearest Gholvad Railway Station and can also be reached via Bordi railway station. For Dahanu Road trains are available from Mumbai and Virar.

By Road

Bordi is about 155 kilometres away from Mumbai. This distance can be covered in about 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Take NH 3 from Thane and continue on the road. Follow the Ghodbunder Road to NH8 in Versova, Mira- Bhayander. Follow NH8 to Dahanu – Jawhar road in Kasa. Continue on Dahanu – Jawhar Road before driving in to Umbergam road in Bordi.
